The Real Story

What Is Organic:

Organic food is grown and produced without any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or genetic engineering. The method of farming fruits and vegetables promotes a healthy environment by recycling resources and considering what is best for our planet. The definition of "organic" was passed by the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) in 1995.

Healthier:
Fresh Organic foods have more vitamins, minerals and enzymes than produce which is more intensively farmed. By eating organics, you support a healthier lifestyle for yourself, family and the farm workers in the fields. By not using potentially harmful pesticides, fungicides, insecticides and fertilizers in food, you are spared the health risks that are associated with such chemicals.

Higher Standard of Food:
An organic certified product ensures that the highest quality product is delivered to market. You can also trust that produce is grown in an environment free of unwanted chemicals. These standards are strictly monitored by the Government. You can visit www.ams.usda.gov/nosb for more information on these standards.

The Cost of Organic:
Simply put, it costs more because the production of organic food must adhere to stricter regulations than conventionally produced products. Transporting and storing these foods takes more labor, therefore, more cost. Additionally, our government farm programs do not subsidize this method of farming as they do conventionally produced foods. This cost is passed on to the consumer.

No Additives:
There are no chemicals, growth hormones or antibiotics in any certified organic products

To Be Certified "Organic"
There must be strict following of guidelines for a farmer or food producer to become certified as organic:

  1. Food producer, farmers and anyone connected with organic production, must keep a written business plan outlining their methods of operating
  2. Farmers can only grow produce in fields which are free of prohibited chemicals for at least three years prior to becoming certified organic
  3. Detailed records must be kept on farming methods and anything used to produce the finished product
  4. Annual inspections are conducted on these businesses

Better For The Environment:
Organically grown produce is free of chemicals which can hurt the environment. This type of agriculture prevents chemicals from getting into the air, water & our earth.
